Garmin RV1090

When we decided to go full time in the RV and see this big beautiful country, I knew I would need something to get me from point A to Point B and in the safest way possible.  I have used Garmin GPS devices in the past and have had good performance from them.

There is not much to choose from when it comes to RV based GPS units so my research took me to Garmin’s RV series of GPS units.

I have had it for over 6 months now and have used it to go from Georgia to California and then from California all the way up to the northeast tip of Maine without a single issue.  It even saved me from running out of gas by showing me where gas stations were along my route and how far away there were from my current location.

What I really like is all the info it provides along the route.

I was able to program in the type and size of vehicle I am driving so I don’t end up on a street where I don’t fit for length, width, height and weight.

I went with the Garmin RV1090 for the 10″ screen.  When you are driving down the road at 60mph in a 38′ motorhome towing a Jeep, you doing want to have to squint at a small screen trying to figure out where you are and where the next turn is.  The 10″ screen is perfect for me and I am able to see everything clearly.  You can get three other size screens as well.  A 6.95, 7 and 8.

The GPS is updated by either WiFi or the Garmin Express app.  I prefer Garmin Express as it works without issue.  I had trouble with updating over WiFi.  You can also upload route files from apps like RV Trip Wizard via Garmin’s BaseCamp app.
